In-Play Betting

Have you ever watched a football match or other sport and just known by the way play is unfolded that somebody was going to score? If you have, in-play betting could well be for you. In-play betting is placing a bet when the game or match is in progress. Occasionally, in-play betting is called live-betting or even in-running betting. The great advantage of in-play betting is that you can get a grasp what is going on before you place your bet. A team may look set to win before kick-off but when the match starts, it might become apparent they are having an off day.

In-play betting also allows you to hedge an initial bet you may have placed before kick off, so if it looks like the team you bet on is going to lose, you can at least lay the bet off to minimise your losses. Not all bookmakers offer in-play betting and in-play betting is not offered on all matches and sporting events, so it is worth checking before the game starts. In addition, in-play odds change as the action unfolds, so you may not get the same odds as you would placing a bet before the start of play.

How in-play betting works

Let’s say you want to bet on an upcoming football match, such as Manchester United versus Everton. Before the game starts, Manchester United may look set to win easily, and the odds offered by the bookmakers may reaffirm this. A bookmaker may offer 1-2 that Manchester United will win. If you bet £5, this means you could win £2.50 plus get back your initial £5 stake. However, as play unfolds, it may become clear that Everton are playing better than United and score first. This means you could end up losing all your money.

Because in-play betting lets you place money on Everton during play, you can minimise your losses. Let’s say the odds on Everton winning have gone from 2-1 before kick off to evens. By placing £5 on Everton to win during play, you could win £5 plus your initial stake of £5, which means you get back all the money you staked on both Everton and Manchester United. Of course, if United manage to score a couple of late goals and win the game, you’ll lose the money staked on Everton, but you’ll still win whatever money you staked on United to win.
